Position summary
Our Client is opening a succession process for the position of Managing Director. This is a role built on trust: the owner is looking for a leader ready to step up, not a candidate in need of training.
The company
Our Client is an owner-led international engineering services company with more than a decade of continuous operation, an established position in its core markets. Our Client supports their customers with technical services at site primarily in marine, power, off-shore and other industries. The scope comprises of commissioning and life cycle support including warranties, modifications, upgrades, evaluation of performance. The company activities are founded on trust, competences and experience of their experts and partners.
Role and mandate
In a small, multi-disciplinary company the Managing Director role is inherently broad. Alongside overall company leadership, the role carries a strong Business Development and commercial component. The core mandate is to:
· Lead the company through the succession transition and beyond, preserving its identity and values.
· Develop and execute a strategy that consolidates our Client's position in existing strategic markets and opens credible new business directions.
· Take ownership of the commercial engine — pipeline, key accounts, partnerships, negotiations, and contract closing.
· Increase the long-term value of the company.
Key accountabilities
· Strategy — develop and implement the company strategy, including new business directions; review execution and adjust.
· Financial performance — oversee financial planning, budget execution, and ongoing monitoring of the company’s financial performance; full P&L responsibility.
· Business development — develop the business concept, identify opportunities and customers, and build/maintain long-term customer relationships in international markets.
· Sales and negotiations — manage project-based sales processes; lead negotiations at executive level and finalise agreements.
· Market intelligence — track market trends, competitor activity, and technological developments; turn signals into commercial moves.
· Operations — oversee operational processes and client-project delivery, in close cooperation with the engineering team.
· People and HR — play a decisive role in recruitment; ensure the ongoing motivation of key staff, particularly in the engineering team; support employees in difficult situations.
· Culture — create and sustain a healthy team spirit; actively build on the company’s values.
· Representation — represent our Client externally to the highest business standards and consistent with the company culture.
Candidate profile — experience and qualifications
· Engineering degree (essential).
· Minimum 10 years of professional experience in a strategic industry for our Client: marine electro-automation services preferred; services for the energy sector (including the wind sector) strongly relevant; other technical-services sectors considered. Experience in technical production alone is not sufficient — a service mindset is required.
· Several years of managing experience with full P&L responsibility. Candidates with a strong senior sales / business-development leadership background in smaller organisations are especially welcome.
· Substantial experience in international markets is essential — selling, leading and building relationships across borders.
· Proven record of developing and implementing sales projects in technical services internationally, and driving them to successful completion.
· Strong understanding of one or more of our Client's strategic industries, including the players, customers and partners in those ecosystems.
· Fluent business English, particularly in the engineering-services context; working proficiency in Polish.
Candidate profile — leadership style and personal qualities
More leader of people than technocrat. In a small company, personal qualities are as decisive as the CV. We are looking for:
· Strategic thinker with the ability to think “outside the box” — and the pragmatism to make decisions under uncertainty.
· Entrepreneurial spirit — creative, energetic, effective, with a “can-do” attitude and a bias for completing what is started.
· Commercial credibility — able to understand a customer’s business quickly, present persuasively, and close contracts.
· Natural customer focus — willingness and appetite to help clients solve their problems.
· Leadership style that fits our Client's culture: inspiring and organising rather than commanding; a conductor of an orchestra who invites the team to co-author the solutions.
· Genuine concern for people, with the willingness and ability to support colleagues in difficult moments.
· Balanced judgement — courage to take calculated risks alongside prudent, safe execution.
· Trustworthy at the level of values — someone whose decisions, intentions, and integrity can be followed into a long succession journey.
Location and terms
· Base location: Poland, with Warsaw or the Tricity (Gdańsk) area preferred. Other Polish locations may be considered if logistics allow.
· International travel as required by clients and business development.
· Compensation: competitive package reflecting the seniority and scope of the role, to be agreed individually; long-term incentive aligned with the succession trajectory to be discussed with the finalist.
